On a Tesla, the windshield is part of the camera system. On Model 3 and Model Y the forward-facing cameras sit in a bracket on the windshield by the rear-view mirror, and the car’s driver assistance relies on them. So a good replacement is about both the right glass and the right process for the cameras afterwards. The details differ between Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X and between years, so we always start from your specific car.
What Tesla says — model by model
- Model Y (Tesla’s do-it-yourself guide): If a camera has moved from its calibrated position — for example because the camera or the windshield was replaced — the calibration is cleared under Controls > Service > Camera Calibration > Clear Calibration. The car then recalibrates the cameras while driving, typically after 32–40 km depending on road and weather.
- Model 3 (service manual, 2024 and later): The forward-facing camera is screwed to a bracket on the windshield. After the work the calibration is cleared, and according to Tesla self-calibration can take up to 160 km of manual driving, depending on road type and conditions. Tesla also says the glass in the camera’s field of view must be free of stains and residue — otherwise Autopilot features may be limited.
- Model Y (service manual, 2025 and later): The windshield has a heater connector that is disconnected and reconnected during replacement. After fitting, the car must be driven to complete calibration, and driver assistance is unavailable in the meantime. Tesla also mentions checking the camera angle and selecting the windshield configuration on the touchscreen.
- Model S (service manual, 2012–2020): The light and rain sensor on the glass is a one-time-use part — if it is removed from the windshield, a new one must be fitted. The camera procedure depends on which Autopilot generation the car has.

Repair or new windshield?
Tesla’s own guidelines for Model Y (2025 and later) do not allow repairs in the camera’s field of view plus 25 mm around it, in the black border along the edge of the glass, or on the passenger side of the windshield. Elsewhere, smaller damage in the outer layer of glass can be repaired within Tesla’s size limits, and no more than three repairs may be made in the same windshield. If the inner layer of glass is damaged, the windshield must be replaced. Source: Tesla: Windshield and Roof Glass Repair and Replacement Guidelines (Model Y 2025+). Send us photos of the damage and we’ll assess whether stone chip repair is an option for your car.
What we need to quote your Tesla
- The registration number — so we can look up model, year and variant.
- Two photos of the damage, one close-up and one from further back, so we can see whether it is in the camera’s field of view, at the edge or in the driver’s view.
- A photo of the camera housing behind the rear-view mirror from inside, if you can.
- Whether the car shows messages about cameras or Autopilot since the damage.
How it works
The replacement itself is a mobile service at the address you give us in Copenhagen and the surrounding area (up to about 50 km), when there is space and suitable conditions for the bonding work. At handover we tell you when the car can be driven and what to look out for in the first days — that depends on the adhesive and the weather. Once the glass is fitted, we go through Tesla’s procedure for your model with you: clearing the camera calibration and self-calibration while driving. Until it completes, some assistance features may be unavailable, so don’t count on Autopilot for the first trips. If the car needs calibration, our own team carries it out at a separate, suitable location — not at your address. The location, logistics and price are agreed with you before anything is booked.
Insurance and warranty
Whether the damage is covered depends on your own insurance. Under Insurance you can see what to have ready and how the process works. On our work we give a 2-year warranty on fitting and sealing from handover — see Quality and warranty.
Frequently asked questions about Tesla
How far do I need to drive before the cameras are calibrated?
It varies. Tesla’s Model Y guide mentions typically 32–40 km, while the Model 3 service manual (2024 and later) says up to 160 km of manual driving. Road, weather and traffic all play a part. Follow the car’s own messages.
Can I drive while the cameras are calibrating?
Yes, the car calibrates while driving. According to Tesla, some assistance features may be unavailable until calibration is complete.
Does my Tesla have a heated windshield?
The Model Y service manual (2025 and later) describes a heater in the windshield. The equipment is not the same on every model and year, so we confirm it from the registration number and your photos before quoting.
Can a stone chip in front of the camera be repaired?
Not on Model Y (2025 and later): Tesla’s guidelines do not allow repairs in the camera’s field of view plus 25 mm around it. A new windshield is the solution there.
Do you also replace side and rear windows on Tesla?
Yes. See side window replacement and rear window replacement. We find the glass that fits your car.
